European carpets such as Savonnerie, Aubusson, and Portugese needlework were an European response to the Oriental carpet weaving world. They are typically very extravagant and floral, and emit a sense of elegance and refinement. Many of them are very flat and seem to be more like a Kilim, but they are in fact, woven with a pile. They have their own distinct texture and feel. They started being made to mimic Persian designs, but they soon took on their own style and look. 

Tapestries are vertically woven textiles. They typically depict a specific scene such as one out of nature or of a prominent political or cultural figure.
